Community Involvement

Both Carly Schuberg and his son, Rex Schuberg were past presidents of the Big Rapids Jay Cees. The Big Rapids Chapter was affiliated with the then United States Junior Chamber of Commerce of which Carly was a charter member on March 29, 1954. the agency has been supportive with both time and money in promoting the Jay Cee organization and the creed it stands for.

The Schuberg Agency is the home of the Big Rapids Jay Cees Hall of Fame. Please stop in to see some of the memorabilia and photo collages that record the group’s many activities over the years.

Rex Schuberg is a graduate of Ferris State College School of Business in 1978. While in college, he was on the track team and won many races. He served eight years on the FSU Alumni Board and was President from 1998 – 2000. He received the Distinguished Alumni Service award from the University in 1994.

The agency continues to support the University through the many donations and the support of the Friends of Ferris. Alice Schuberg, the agency founder, has a scholarship set up and funded by Carly Schuberg which goes to a Mecosta County high school graduate who will be attending the teaching program.

Both Carly Schuberg (1961) and Rex Schuberg (1994) served as President of this fine organization. While chairman of the Small Business Council, Rex is excited to have started the Business After Hours Program, the Business Person of the Year Awards, The ambassador Awards, and to have reinstated the annual Holiday Gala, which today is the major fund raiser of the Chamber.

The Schuberg Agency continues to support the Chamber in many ways including the initiation of a Chamber Group Discount for insurance coverage options offered by Auto-Owners.

The Schuberg Agency is proud to say that it has the third oldest consecutively sponsored women’s bowling team in the United States. The original team, pictured here, started at Morgan’s Lanes which were above the A&P store.

They were founded by Carly Schuberg in 1952 and have many championships to their credit. since the start, they have bowled at the Rapid Lanes on M-20 (Ferris Pharmacy building location), the Casa Nova (now known as Striketown) and the current team bowls at Eastgate Lanes.

Rex served as chairman of the drive in 1990 which exceeded its goal of $180,000.00. Rex initiated the name change from the Mecosta County Area United Way to include Osceola County, which had been a long-time contributor and beneficiary, which did not have its name included. This resulted in substantial growth in Osceola County fundraising in the following years.

The Schuberg Agency is a cornerstone member of the Foundation. This designation was the result of contributions made during the start-up of the organization. In 2002, Rex completed a drive to raise $10,000.00 to start the Linda Willette Class of 1974 scholarship fund. The interest from this fund will go to a Big Rapids High School senior in the form of a scholarship honoring the memory of Linda. The Willette family and the class members of 1974 made this possible.

Rex raised a steer his senior year in high school, which he named Sir Loin. While learning a valuable lesson in animal husbandry, he has returned the favor by helping local 4-H students with his support of the Annual 4-H Auction at the Mecosta County Area Fair.
