“The Rest of the Story”

Old Main Burns – February 21, 1950

The picture above captures the fire to Ferris Institute which started at approximately 5:15 p.m. on 2/21/50. Only seconds after this picture was taken, the tower engulfed in flames, crashed with a thundering roar. Four students were injured in the blaze and the estimated damage was $450,000. Ferris Institute was insured at the time by four local agencies: the Schuberg Agency, the Hagadone Agency, the Eldridge Muchler Agency and the Pangborn Agency. Tom Freeland was the Fire Chief of the Big Rapids Fire Department at the time and Byron Brophy, who later had a hall named after him, was the President of FSC . No cause was ever determined for the blaze, although a disgruntled student was suspect since final exams were set for the next day. Other schools, including Michigan State, University of Michigan, and Central Michigan University, assisted Ferris State College in getting back into operation within ten days. The local Lions Club and the Red Cross assisted authorities in helping the students. As a result of the fire, Governor Williams appropriated $579,000 eight days later to install sprinkler systems in all the State’s mental hospitals.

Other news stories of the day included information on Mecosta County’s Polio Drive, while the Big Rapids Theater advertised “The Doctor and The Girl” tarring Glenn Ford and Janet Leigh, and the “Sands of Iwo Jima” starring John Wayne.

BIG RAPIDS — Tyler Schuberg, of the Schuberg Insurance Agency, was recognized by Auto-Owners Insurance as one of its top life, health and annuity insurance sales agents in the U.S.

Schuberg ranked 48th out of more than 19,000 agents in 26 states. The award is based on total sales, said Jeff Harrold, Auto-Owners Insurance chairman and CEO.

“Tyler finished 48th, which is at the very top of the top 1 percent of all agents,” Harrold said during a visit to Big Rapids on Wednesday. “To finish in the top 50 is a real credit to Tyler and the Schuberg Agency. … It’s based on consistent sales and the Schuberg Agency has done that for years.

“Life insurance sales are a tough thing to do, because no one wants to face the fact that they’re dealing with their own mortality, but it’s a big thing that everyone needs. Tyler and the Schuberg Agency has done a great job on it.”

Honored by the recognition, Schuberg thanked his clients for holding their insurance policies with his family’s insurance agency.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the company because it shows their appreciation for your hard work, not only the hard work I’ve done individually but the work of our staff as well. It’s a honor not only for myself, but everyone at the Schuberg Insurance Agency,” Schuberg said. “I’d like to thank everyone who has taken out a life insurance policy with us and I look forward to doing business with other people and meeting their life insurance needs.”

Carl Schuberg

April 20, 1928 – December 30, 2011

Carl’s Life Story

A true visionary, Carly Schuberg was a leader within the community he loved. A self-reliant and hard working man, like his family before him, he strived to live within the integrity for which his family stood. Gone, but never to be forgotten, he will remain in the hearts of many.

Born Carl M. Schuberg, “Carly”, on April 20, 1928, he was one of three sons born to Carl A. and Alice M. (Stephenson) Schuberg in Wyoming, Michigan. An exciting time in our nation’s history, the Roaring Twenties redefined the culture of America while the entertainment industry reached new heights. The discovery of Penicillin forever changed the field of medicine; the legendary baseball players captured the attention of many while the nation was on the threshold of the Great Depression.

Carly grew up in Colfax Township, Michigan alongside his brothers, John and Shirley. Together they shared boyhood adventures on their family farm, but more importantly; Carly learned a strong work ethic on the farm. He attended the local schools and during high school played on the football team. The very day his father was able to break away to attend one of his games, Carly was unfortunately knocked out, but it didn’t deter him from coming back into the game.

From the age of 16, Carly was a member of the National Guard. With the onset of World War II, he left his education behind at the age of 17 to join the U.S. Marines. As a Private First Class, he served with the K Company, 3rd Battalion in the Philippines. Following his honorable discharge from service, he went on to complete his high school education. Throughout the years, Carly continued to be a member of the National Guard. In later years, he was involved in the Guard’s mission during the Detroit race riots, and with his usual sense of humor; he could never comprehend why people rioted over a horse “race”.

Carly’s return home after the service was an exciting time in his life. Not only was his career underway, he enjoyed the excitement that filled the air at the war’s end. In 1946, Carly joined his mother in the family business, the Schuberg Agency. Built upon moral standards, his mother began the insurance agency in 1945 with a forthright pledge to protect the financial security of area businesses and families. His uncle, Ezra Stephenson, joined the firm as a real estate broker, which added to the many ways the agency served the community. Carly’s mother taught him well. Known for her integrity, she was a large influence in Carly’s successful business career and community minded- spirit. Always the hard worker, Carly continued his love for farming and had hopes of returning to it one day.

His life was forever changed when he met a pretty young girl roller skating at the local armory. Carly was introduced to Kathleen “Katy” Hurst by his friend and her bother, Bill. They began dating and fell in love. Although they eloped on April 1, 1949 (April fool’s Day), they were later married before family and friends in a beautiful ceremony at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Soon after making a home together, Carly and Katy began a family of their own. With three children to share their love, they welcomed their daughter Carlleen, their son Rex, and their youngest daughter Linda. Over the years they also enjoyed the companionship of three beloved dogs: Trixie, Thor, and Lar-C who were an active part of their family.

In addition, Carly became a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Big Rapids. He also enjoyed his ski trips with Katy, but his most memorable trip was to Sweden where he reunited with family; this was a highlight in his life. However, one of the greatest joys in his life was after retirement when he went back to farming. Farming was in his blood and brought joy to his heart.

There are four events that should trigger a review of your policy:

  1. When your policy comes up for renewal
Don’t just automatically send a check to your insurance company. Take the time to review your coverage and call your agent with any questions or concerns that you may have regarding your homeowners insurance. Ask yourself the following questions:

    • Has the company made any changes in coverage since last year?
    • Does my policy now include a separate deductible for risks like hurricane or hail?
    • Should I raise the deductible to save money?
    • Am I taking advantage of all available discounts?
    • Do I need to raise the amount of coverage for liability, personal possessions or the structure?
    • Should I comparison shop for a cheaper rate?
    • Do I need flood, earthquake or an umbrella policy?
  2. Major purchases or alterations/improvements to your home
If you have made any major purchases, make sure that you have the proper coverage. And, don’t forget about gifts. If you have received a diamond engagement ring or if a member of your family has bought you expensive artwork or a computer, talk to your agent about either increasing the amount of insurance you have for your personal possessions or purchasing a floater/endorsement for these items. A floater will give you higher and broader coverage for these items than you have under your homeowners policy. If you have made major improvements to your home, such as adding a new room, enclosing a porch or expanding a kitchen or bathroom, you risk being underinsured if you don’t report the increase in square footage to your insurance company. Don’t forget about new structures outside of your home. If you have built a gazebo, a new shed for your tools or installed a pool or hot tub, you need to speak to your agent. Keep receipts and records in case you need to forward copies to your company.
  3. You have made your home safer
If you have installed a state-of-the art fire/burglar alarm system or upgraded your heating, plumbing or electrical system, make sure that your insurance company knows about these improvements. You may qualify for a discount.
  4. Major lifestyle changes
Marriage, divorce, or adult children who move back into the family home, can all affect your homeowners insurance. When people move in or move out, they take their belongings with them. And you may need additional coverage if there is a sizable increase in the value of the belongings in your home.Starting a home-based business can also trigger changes in your coverage. You will need to get additional coverage for business liability and equipment. If the business is your primary source of income, you may need a Businessowners Package Policy (BOP). You may also need professional liability coverage, which is excluded under in-home business and businessowners policies. For more information, see Business Insurance.
